Greece has launched an ambitious initiative to link culture and regional growth through the development of fifteen Cultural Masterplans across the country. The project aims to transform heritage assets into engines of sustainable economic and social development, enhancing the visibility and vitality of local communities.
The selected areas include both urban centres and islands, from the northern cities of Xanthi and Komotini to the Aegean islands of Ikaria, Samos, and Chios. Each location will design a comprehensive plan that integrates cultural preservation, tourism strategy, and local entrepreneurship. The goal is to create distinctive regional identities while boosting employment and innovation within the creative industries.
The Cultural Masterplans are being developed with the support of universities, research institutes, and local authorities. They focus not only on heritage restoration but also on modern cultural infrastructure, training for creative professionals, and community participation in decision-making. The initiative represents a shift in thinking — treating culture not as a cost, but as a strategic investment in regional development.
For local communities, this programme offers an opportunity to reimagine their future through culture. It calls for cooperation among municipalities, NGOs, and businesses to ensure that cultural projects deliver long-term benefits. For organisations involved in regional development, it is an invitation to support creative partnerships and help build a stronger, more cohesive Greece.
